The editorial board of Economic and Political Weekly writes that the Finance Commission has acted ably as an independent arbiter of resources between the national government and the states. The editors express concern that the commission’s most recent mandate, however, could skew the body’s view of an already hierarchical relationship between national and state governments to one of command and control.
