Olakunle Adeniran considers the upcoming (October 19) vote in the Canadian province of Alberta about whether the province should begin the process of separating from Canada. Adeniran writes that this question, along with nine others on the ballot, explore membership and identity in the region’s political community as well as the relationship between identity and federalism: “[the ballot questions] show how a politics of grievance can turn into a politics of membership, and membership is where disputes about federalism become disputes about identity.” Read more here.
