Citizenship Rumor Alarms Italian Leaders

A report this week in a South Tyrolean newspaper that Austria plans to offer citizenship to German-speaking — but not to Italian-speaking — residents of the region sparked a sharp response from Italian leaders. The mountainous region of northern Italy was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until its collapse following World War I, but many German-speaking residents still view Austria as the “motherland.” Read more here.
