Police Funding Cannot Be Tied to Immigration Help

In 2017, the Justice Department changed how it awards funds for local community policing by boosting applications from localities that agreed to help Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents identify and apprehend jail inmates believed to be in the country illegally. Last week a federal court issued a nationwide ban against the policy change. The court ruled that the policy forced local governments to participate in immigration enforcement, which, the court held, violates the constitutional separation of powers between federal and state governments. Read more here.
